Aquaphor vs. Vaseline - Which is Better?

As a dermatologist, I am often asked about the similarities and differences between Aquaphor Healing Ointment and Vaseline. Both of these products are commonly used as moisturizers, and they are both excellent options for people with dry or irritated skin. However, there are some key differences that patients should be aware of when deciding which product to use.

Similarities:

  1. Moisturizing properties: Both Aquaphor and Vaseline are effective at moisturizing dry, cracked, or irritated skin. They work by creating a barrier on the skin that helps to lock in moisture and prevent further water loss.

  2. Safe for sensitive skin: Both products are generally safe for people with sensitive skin, as they are fragrance-free and contain no added dyes or preservatives.

  3. Widely available: Both Aquaphor and Vaseline are available at most drugstores and grocery stores, making them easy to find and purchase.

Differences:

  1. Ingredients: Aquaphor contains a combination of ingredients, including petrolatum, mineral oil, ceresin, and lanolin alcohol, whereas Vaseline is made up solely of petrolatum. Aquaphor also contains panthenol, which can help to soothe and heal damaged skin.

  2. Consistency: Aquaphor has a slightly thicker consistency than Vaseline, which makes it more effective at creating a barrier on the skin.

  3. Use: Both Aquaphor and Vaseline can be used as a healing ointment and a moisturizer. However Aquaphor has more scientific studies dedicated to it's use in wound healing.

  4. Cost: Aquaphor tends to be slightly more expensive than Vaseline, due to its additional ingredients and healing properties.
