PRP Treatment for Hair Loss

PRP Hair Loss Q&A

What is platelet-rich plasma?
Dr. Knott derives platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from a very small sample of your blood. Your blood contains platelets, small blood cells that your body directs to injuries any time you get hurt. These platelets help your blood clot while also delivering growth factors, or substances that help your body heal and generate new cells in the injured area.

Platelets are extremely effective at stimulating regeneration in your body. The problem is that your body doesn’t know to direct these platelets to your hair follicles to trigger healing there. By taking a small blood sample and placing it in a centrifuge, Dr. Knott separates out the platelets, deriving the PRP. Once ready, she uses the PRP to introduce a flood of platelets — and their growth factors — into your scalp.

How does PRP hair loss treatment work?
During treatment, Dr. Knott injects PRP into targeted locations across your scalp. This allows the PRP to penetrate into your hair follicles, where it increases blood flow. At the same time, it stimulates regeneration in dormant hair follicles and encourages all treated hair follicles to grow thick shafts of hair.

The influx of growth factors PRP provides restores your ability to grow a full head of thick hair. What’s more, because Dr. Knott derives the PRP from your own blood, the treatment is completely safe and natural.

What should I expect after PRP hair loss treatment?
While a single PRP hair loss treatment can help to increase hair growth, Dr. Knott almost always recommends a series of multiple treatments spaced about a month apart for the best results.

The results from PRP hair loss treatment aren’t immediate. Instead, the treatment stimulates your scalp’s ability to naturally grow hair. Your results develop over time as your hair follicles create new, thick shafts of hair.

By design, PRP treatment restores your ability to naturally grow hair. Over time, though, some hair follicles may fall dormant again. Fortunately, in those cases, Dr. Knott can provide a single touchup treatment to help you maintain your results through the years.
