Asthma in Children

Asthma is a common, respiratory condition that can affect infants and children.  Knowing the signs and symptoms can help with a speedy diagnosis and proper treatment. At the office of Bel Air, we can help!

Respiratory conditions can be scary and overwhelming at first. But we are well prepared to guide you through what you need to know to ensure your child is accurately diagnosed and treated. Asthma is the most serious, common respiratory condition; and it can be difficult to detect in young children.

Warning Signs of Asthma

The important thing is to be aware of the warning signs of asthma so you can seek medical attention right away. An early diagnosis will help you know what to do to prevent an asthma attack and keep your child safe and healthy.

  1. Wheezing and whistling sound when breathing
  2. Coughing
  3. Rapid breathing
  4. Difficultly breathing
  5. Complaints of chest pain
  6. Lack of energy
  7. Weakness and tiredness

It’s also important to tell your pediatrician about any family history of asthma. There are different types of asthma. Sometimes it may be brought on by exercise, while other times it may be related to an allergy. In addition to family history, other risk factors for asthma include allergies, frequent respiratory infections, low birth weight, exposure to second-hand smoke, and living in a low-income, urban environment.

Although asthma cannot be cured, it can be controlled. If your child is diagnosed with asthma, your doctor will discuss treatment options and help you get comfortable with the treatment plan so that it becomes a regular and non-stressful part of your routine. Talk to your doctor about any respiratory concerns you may have and your doctor will direct you as to the next step.
