Botulinum Toxin for Cosmetic Uses

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a purified protein toxin produced by the clostridium botulinum bacteria. Only tiny amounts of Botox® are used thus preventing serious side effects. Botox® is injected into a specific muscle, which blocks the nerve impulse from reaching the area, so the muscle weakens. As the muscle weakens the skin overlying the muscle relaxes and the wrinkles soften and often disappear.

Safety of Botox®

The safety and efficacy of Botox® treatment was evaluated through a controlled study that was co-authored by our doctors. The results showed that use of the injections was a safe method to reduce glabellar lines. Click to see the abstract of this publication.

What improvements can be achieved with Botox®?

The most common areas treated are the vertical frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines and crow's feet around the eyes. In addition, Botox® may be injected into areas under the arm for treatment of excessive sweating.

Is Botox® safe?

Botox® has been used safely and successfully in ophthalmology for over 10 years and for wrinkle treatment for over 7 years. Possible side effects, which include bruising, are temporary and localized to the area of injection.

How long does the treatment last?

Botox® is not permanent, but is an effective treatment that can give you a more relaxed appearance. The effects usually last three to five months. After several treatments the effects of Botox® may begin to last longer. Download the brochure in PDF format.
Dramatic results can be achieved with Botox® in combination with Microdermabrasion. If you would like to find out more, call (972) 386-7546, extension 229.

Botox® Research

Alan Menter, M.D., was recently published in Dermatologic Clinics.

Our physicians participated in the pivotal nationwide clinical research study evaluating the safety and efficacy of botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of glabellar lines (the frown lines between the eyebrows). The conclusion of the study showed the injections to be remarkably safe and exceptionally effective in reducing glabellar lines in the overwhelming majority of treated patients.

We have participated in the national clinical research study for the treatment of excessive underarm sweating with Botox®, with excellent results and have been selected as a specialized training center to teach other physicians the correct way to use Botox®.
