WHAT IS ATOPIC DERMATITIS?
- Common skin disease affects 10-20% of children and 1-3% adults
- Multiple names (“eczema,” “dermatitis,” “atopic eczema”)
- History of asthma, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, or sinusitis
SYMPTOMS
- Itchy, dry, scaly skin that can blister, ooze and weep fluid
- Secondary skin infections due to rubbing and scratching
- Trouble sleeping
TREATMENT
MOISTURIZE
- Reduces dryness and itching
- Apply immediately after bathing or showering
- Fragrance free, mild lotions/creams
- Cetaphil, Cerave, Aveeno, Eucerin, Neutrogena
HYGIENE & HYDRATION
- Luke warm water
- Mild, fragrance free soaps
- Limit to 5-10 minutes
- BLEACH BATHS (1/4-1/2 cup regular strength bleach mixed in full tub water)
PRESCRIPTION TOPICALS
- Steroid cream or ointment is treatment of choice
- Non-steroid cream or ointment (Protopic, Elidel, Eucrisa)
OTHER
- Diphenhydramine/hydroxyzine if sleep disturbed
- Antibiotic therapy (secondary infection)
- Dupilumab injectable (Dupixent) for severe/resistant AD
TIPS
- AVOID laundry detergents with fragrance & dyes.
- AVOID dryer sheets or fabric softeners.
- AVOID scented body sprays, colognes or perfumes.
