Blue Light Therapy for Acne

Blue-U is An Innovative Way to Control Acne

Many young adults, people in their 20’s and 30’s, have trouble with acne that is hard to control (not just teenagers). If you have mild to moderate acne and are uncomfortable taking antibiotics, or are unhappy with your current topical treatment results, Blu-U blue light therapy (light treatment without drugs or antibiotics) may be something for you to try. Ask us about Blu-U blue light therapy for acne.

What is Blu-U Blue Light Treatment for Acne?

The Blu-U is a unique blue light that kills the acne-promoting bacteria, Propionibacterium Acnes (P. acnes) that lives in and on your skin. Treatments are simple; you sit with your face close to the blue light for a short time (approximately 17 minutes) once to twice per week for 5 to 8 weeks, or until your acne is significantly better or gone. Blu-U blue light acne therapy is an easy, safe, painless treatment without any downtime or recovery, and it does not require any aftercare. After several weeks, Blu-U helps control your acne. Re-treat with Blu-U blue light treatment for acne as needed or recommended.

Ancillary topical medications are usually recommended along with Blu-U.‍

Contraindications to Blu-U blue light therapy for acne include patients with porphyria or cutaneous photosensitivity to blue light. According to the manufacturer, there have been no consistent adverse reactions to concomitant photosensitizing antibiotic use or other medications. Blue light safety in pregnancy is unknown as research data is lacking.

Photodynamic Therapy with Blu-U and Ameluz / Levulan for Acne

Photodynamic therapy is another related light-based treatment option for acne. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a medical treatment that uses a light source to activate a topically applied photosensitizing medication [i.e. levulinic acid (Ameluz or Levulan)]. PDT selectively targets and improves active acne and oily skin areas. 2-4 sessions may be necessary for optimum improvement. PDT also reduces oily skin, diminishes enlarged oil (sebaceous) glands and pores, helps small acne scars, and helps rejuvenate the skin by improving or reducing any sun damage, age spots/freckles, and wrinkles. This minor outpatient procedure is performed in an office environment.

For more detailed information about photodynamic therapy, download our PDT Informed Consent & Patient Instructions handout.

Blu-U blue light treatments and PDT for acne are not covered by insurance. Discounts for package pricing apply for Blu-U blue light acne treatments.
