Allergic Asthma Treatment

Chronic medical conditions like allergic asthma can be limiting on your daily life. Naturally, you want relief, but treatment always comes with concerns. Ohio Infusion Services understands and wants to keep you informed about your infusion treatment options. Let's get you on the road to feeling better.

What is allergic asthma?

Allergic asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects your airways. When you breathe in various triggering substances they will initiate an inflammatory response in your body. Airways will then constrict and produce excess mucus, making it very difficult to get adequate oxygen into your lungs.

There are several common triggers that affect the vast majority of allergic asthma patients, but some individuals can't identify what initiates their symptoms. These aren't typically seasonal allergies that are prompted by pollen, but instead several common indoor triggers like pet dander, dust mites, and other insects.

Knowing your personal allergic asthma triggers can help you to get a diagnosis and know what to avoid to keep symptoms at bay. But remember that conditions can vary and responses can range from mild to severe, which could mean multiple attacks per day and intensified symptoms at night.

Symptoms might include:

  • Wheezing and coughing
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Waking up during the night
  • Requiring rescue medication

Allergic asthma can be effectively managed. Ohio Infusion Services has a treatment option that could relieve some of your symptoms.

Infusion therapy for allergic asthma

Ohio Infusion Services offers treatment for allergic asthma with XOLAIR® (omalizumab), a medication that was developed to treat this condition. It works to prevent the body's natural response to a triggering allergen, often reducing allergic asthma symptoms and attacks. After talking with your doctor, testing is typically done to confirm whether or not you have an allergic response to year-round allergens. Then, for patients that fit the criteria, your doctor may recommend or prescribe XOLAIR infusions. XOLAIR will then be administered via a subcutaneous injection every 2 to 4 weeks, with a unique dosage being determined for each patient.

Side effects of infusion therapy for allergic asthma

Every treatment carries its own risks, and infusion therapy for allergic asthma is no different. XOLAIR is considered to be safe, but no medication will react the same way in everyone's body.

Some of the signs of a bad reaction might be:

  • Wheezing, shortness of breath, cough, chest tightness, or trouble breathing
  • Low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, rapid or weak heartbeat, or increased anxiety
  • Flushing, itching, hives, or feeling warm
  • Swelling of the throat or the tongue, throat tightness, hoarse voice, or trouble swallowing

At Ohio Infusion Services you can rest assured that as you receive premium care in the privacy of your own suite, trained medical staff is always nearby. As with any medication there is a detailed list of possible side effects or potential interactions — your prescribing physician can discuss the ins and outs of what to look out for.

What to expect from infusion therapy for allergic asthma

After you talk with your doctor and decide to proceed, they will need to issue a referral to our facility. While here for your treatment, our skilled and knowledgeable staff will be happy to review your treatment plan and discuss what you need to know about infusion therapy. An on-site physician or nurse will oversee your first treatment to ensure that your dosage is well tolerated. After the initial session you will have full, private access to your own treatment suite for the duration of your infusion. We hope that XOLAIR treatment will help your condition right away, but medications often take some time to reach their full effect.
