Doxycycline and minocycline are oral antibiotics that may be used to fight infections, but also have anti-inflammatory properties.

The reason I use them in the treatment of skin disorders, such as rosacea and acne, is for their anti-inflammatory properties, not to kill bacteria. This is because the underlying problem for these skin conditions is primarily due to inflammation, not infection.

Oracea is a relatively new “low dose” preparation of doxycycline. It has enough medicine to decrease inflammation in the skin, but the blood levels stay low enough that it does not kill bacteria. By not killing bacteria, there are fewer side effects, such as yeast infections. And, more importantly, it does not breed antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

There is an emphasis on developing and using medications that provide effective treatment without increasing the public health problem of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria.
