DNCB immunotherapy uses a medication (dinitrochlorobenzene) applied to the skin for the treatment of warts.
DNCB helps to clear warts by activating the immune system to recognize abnormal cells infected with the human papilloma virus (the virus that causes warts).
The DNCB is first applied to the skin so that the body builds up an allergic reaction against the chemical. This will cause the skin to become red and swollen with some itching similar to contact dermatitis, or skin allergy. Eventually, the immune cells that cause the contact dermatitis start to recognize the skin cells infected with the virus. Sensitizing the body's immune system to DNCB may take 3-14 days.
Application of DNCB
- The frequency and method of application depends on the skin area being treate
- Most areas of the skin can be used once a day, before going to bed.
- When applied to the palms of the hands or soles of the feet, it may be helpful to first soak the skin in warm water for 3-5 minutes and cover the area with plastic wrap (Saran Wrap) held in place with tape or a bandage. This helps spreading the medication to other parts of the body.
- Treatment generally last 12-16 weeks but may require shorter or longer treatments depending on the response.

Precautions When using DNCB
- Apply the medication carefully with a cotton swab.
- Do not get the medication in your eyes
- Be sure to wash your hands after applying the medication unless your are using the medication to treat your fingers or hands.
NOTE: Once your body becomes sensitized to DNC, application of the medicaton onto the skin on any part of your body may result in severe inflammation.
