There are several new ways to monitor glucose levels for people with diabetes, including:
- Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) - These devices measure glucose levels in the interstitial fluid (the fluid between the cells) under the skin and send the data to a receiver or smartphone app.
- Flash Glucose Monitors - These are similar to CGMs but instead of a sensor that needs to be replaced every few days it uses a small sensor worn on the back of the upper arm that lasts for 14 days.
- Smart Insulin Pens - These are insulin pens that are connected to a smartphone app, allowing the patient to track their insulin doses, glucose levels and carbohydrate intake.
- Artificial Pancreas - This is a closed-loop system that uses a CGM and an insulin pump that communicate with each other to automatically adjust insulin delivery based on the patient's glucose levels.
It is important to note that these technologies are not suitable for everyone and it is always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider to see what is best for you.
