When should I introduce peanuts to my baby?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends introducing peanut-containing foods to infants at high risk of developing peanut allergy, between 4 and 6 months of age, after the introduction of other solid foods. High risk infants are those with severe eczema, egg allergy, or both.

For infants without these risk factors, the AAP recommends waiting until 6 months of age to introduce peanut-containing foods along with other solid foods.

It's important to note that introducing peanuts early, in the recommended age range, is associated with a lower risk of developing peanut allergy.

It's important to speak with your pediatrician before introducing peanuts to your baby. They can evaluate your baby's individual risks and provide guidance on when and how to introduce peanuts.

When introducing peanuts to your baby, it's important to start with a small amount, such as a thin layer of peanut butter on a cracker or a small amount of peanut powder mixed with breast milk or formula. Be on the lookout for any signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, swelling, difficulty breathing or vomiting, and call your pediatrician or seek medical attention immediately.

It's also important to note that some babies may have a reaction to other allergens and it's important to consult with a pediatrician before introducing any new food to your baby.
