What if I can’t Afford Epinephrine Medication?

Epinephrine is the first-line treatment for anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction. If you cannot afford the cost of  your epinephrine medication, there are a few options:

Shop around. Compare prices at other pharmacies or check prices at GoodRx, Medical Assistance Tool and Needymeds.

Compare total out-of-pocket cost from one epinephrine auto-injector device to another as sometimes prices will vary. Depending on whether or not you have insurance that covers your prescription, switching to another device may save you money. In addition, if you have been prescribed a brand name device, you can always check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if there is a similar generic version that would cost less. Just remember: if you do switch devices, learn how to use the new device since they all operate a bit differently. Read the package instructions and watch the training videos on the manufacturer’s website to familiarize yourself with proper use of the auto-injector you bring home.

Contact the manufacturer for patient assistance programs.

Ask your doctor to prescribe an alternative. Sometimes less costly alternatives, including generics, are available.

It’s very important to use your medication as prescribed. Be sure to talk with your doctor if you are unable to afford your epinephrine medication – this is a potentially life-saving medication if you have severe allergies.
