Tips & Wisdom

Overview of Asthma Medications
There are many different types and brands of asthma drugs on the market. We believe it is helpful to classify the drugs to help understand how they are used. The two main types are bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory medications (steroid/cortisone-type medications). Two other types of medications – Leukotriene modifiers (e.g., Singulair™) and phosphodiesterase inhibitors (e.g. theophylline) – are difficult to classify since they seem to have properties of both bronchodilators...
Should Allergic Children Have Pets?
It is well accepted that furred pets contribute to allergic diseases such as allergic rhintis (hay fever), asthma, and atopic dermatitis (allergic eczema). We allergists often see patients who are experiencing sneezing and wheezing that is due directly to breathing in cat and dog dander particles. Symptoms can improve greatly with total avoidance of the pets, but patients are usually unwilling to part with their beloved animals. So, we often suggest rinsing the pets with water twice a week, h...

Patient Education Resources

Basics of Allergy Shots (Immunotherapy)
Allergen Immunotherapy is a treatment program designed to reduce allergic sensitivity to environmental substances (allergens like dust mite, mold, animal dander and pollens). Extracts of these substances are injected over a period of time. These extract mixtures are basically vaccines that teach your immune system to ignore these normally harmless substances. They do not contain any drugs. They are just a combination of proteins that make up the allergens and are safe for children and adults. ...

Education & Training

Dr. Mark Young performed his Pediatric Allergy/Immunology and Adult Allergy/Immunology training at Georgetown University.

The Allergy Group

Asthma and Allergy Associates of Florida, founded by Dr. Morris Beck in 1979, has attracted some of the best physicians in the field. It has grown to a full-service network of allergists with offices throughout Miami, Broward and Palm Beach. This achievement is a result of our deep respect and commitment to our patients. All of our physicians are specially trained in the field of Allergy/Immunology. Many of them lecture to their peers on the subject and have been listed among the top doctors in South Florida and the nation. We are proud to be The Allergy Group.

An allergist/immunologist is a physician specially trained to manage and treat allergies and asthma. After medical school, they must do three years of training in internal medicine or pediatrics. Then they must complete a two-year fellowship in the specialty of Allergy/Immunology before being eligible for certification. Allergist/immunologists who are listed as ABAI-certified have passed the certifying examination of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI).

Allergist/immunologists are trained in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of immune system problems such as allergies, asthma, and certain immune deficiency disorders. A major focus of the specialty is working to eliminate the causes of allergic symptoms, namely decreasing allergic inflammation. This is done by working with the patient to discover the triggers of their allergy, help teach avoidance measures, and often using allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) to decrease the allergic response. An allergist/immunologist also has expertise when it comes to all the latest medications used to treat allergy and asthma
