Kay attended Vanderbilt University and graduated magna cum laude from the Medical College of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1984. She worked in cardiothoracic surgical intensive care in her early nursing years at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, spent some time working outside the health care field and raising her child, and then returned to health care in 2009 after earning a Master of Science in Nursing from Kennesaw State University. She has been treating patients with chronic conditions for eight years as a board-certified family nurse practitioner and has additional training and experience in the specialty of allergy and asthma.
