Cosmeceuticals are non-prescription topical products that can improve the complexion by reducing the appearance of fine lines, evening out discoloration, both brown and red, and even improving skin elasticity. The most well-known topical cosmeceutical is retinol, a vitamin A derivative, which helps stimulate collagen production, prevent collagen breakdown, and evens the skin tone. Sometimes retinol is irritating, and if one cannot tolerate it, bakuchiol is a retinoid alternative equal to retinol in effect but less irritating. Another class of cosmeceuticals that is extremely exciting is peptides. These are short fragments of proteins that have many targets in the skin to create an array of cosmetic enhancements over time. I believe, given their high tolerability and broad applications, further research will prove these to be best-in-class topicals for targeted approaches to skin rejuvenation. I recommend speaking to a board-certified dermatologist to find out what works best for you.
