No one likes the look of excess fullness beneath the face, yet millions of Americans suffer from the dreaded double chin and do nothing to correct or eliminate it.
Eliminating the double chin is no exception. The recent introduction and use of deoxycholic acid, known also as Kybella, has provided displeased individuals worldwide a safe, easy, and effective way to get rid of that excess flesh just below the jaw.
The clinically-proven use of deoxycholic acid to target and eliminate fat deposits in the neck involves a series of multiple injections applied around the neck and face over a period of time. The injections contain a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring substance found within the body that facilitates the breakdown and absorption of fat cells. Use of Kybella acts as a way to target and eliminate cells permanently, which means the results are long-term.
Kybella is administered only by trained medical professionals and consists of a series of 15 to 20 minute sessions in which multiple injections are directly applied to the targeted areas. An initial consultation prior to each session will help you and your provider determines the specifics of your treatment. The sessions will take place no sooner than four to six weeks between each, and the total number of sessions will again depend on your individual assessment. However, often no more than 2 – 4 sessions total is recommended.
Because the procedure is non-invasive, it’s practically pain-free with zero physical down time. Patients only experience slight bruising, numbness, and/or swelling visible after each visit.
Over time, your body resolves the swelling, revealing a slimmer, more youthful neck.
What makes Kybella especially great is that results are permanent. The fat destroyed by Kybella will never return.
What is KYBELLA™?
KYBELLA™ is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin. Submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin”, is a common yet undertreated facial aesthetic condition. It can impact a broad range of adults, including both men and women, and can be influenced by several factors such as aging, genetics and weight gain, and is often resistant to diet and exercise alone.
If you’re bothered by submental fullness, you’re not alone. According to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS):
- 67% of people said they’re bothered by under-the-chin fullness, or double chin
- People are just as bothered by under-the-chin fullness as they are by lines and wrinkles around and under their eyes
Who should not receive KYBELLA™?
You should not receive KYBELLA™ if you have an infection in the treatment area.
Before receiving KYBELLA™, tell Dr. Mash about all of your medical conditions, including if you: Have had or plan to have surgery on your face, neck, or chin; have had cosmetic treatments on your face, neck, or chin; have had or have medical conditions in or near the neck area; have had or have trouble swallowing; have bleeding problems; are pregnant or plan to become pregnant (it is not known if KYBELLA™ will harm your unborn baby); are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed (it is not known if KYBELLA™ passes into your breast milk; talk to your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby if you receive KYBELLA™).
Tell Dr. Mash about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell her if you take a medicine that prevents the clotting of your blood (antiplatelet or anticoagulant medicine).
How many treatments will I need?
You and Dr. Mash will customize your KYBELLA™ treatment regimen, including how many treatments you need, based on your desired chin profile. Dr. Mash will give you a series of injections at each treatment session, which are spaced a month or more apart. Many patients experience visible contouring of their chin profile in two to four treatment sessions spaced at least one month apart. Up to 6 treatments may be administered.
