About Dr. Mahsa Karavan-Jahromi, MD, MPH

Dr. Karavan has completed extensive research in both public health and clinical subjects and her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals. She has also given presentations at meetings across the country. Her most recent research focused on treatment of acne scarring with lasers.

Dr. Karavan treats a variety of general skin disorders and is also interested in cosmetic dermatology. She is particularly passionate about early detection of melanoma. Within her first 3 years of practice, Dr. Karavan diagnosed and treated over 600 melanomas, over 70% of which were caught at the earliest possible stage called ‘melanoma in-situ’. If caught early melanoma is highly curable at this stage while mortality drastically increases with more advanced stages, making early detection crucial.

Dr. Karavan’s goal is to serve as an expert guide for her patients, while also focusing on what they need and want from their care. She believes in empowering her patients with education and scientific information while working together to help them make important decisions about their health. She also strives to build an open, trusting, and judgement-free physician-patient relationship where her patients can communicate their needs freely. “Whether their skin disorder is straightforward or complex, I am there to accompany them on their journey, and to offer them a welcoming experience”, says Dr. Karavan. “Given my own cultural background, I am highly motivated to help my patients overcome cultural barriers, and to receive the best care possible”.

Lip Flip VS. Filler: Which Do I Choose?
Injectable cosmetic dermatology treatments have become extremely popular over the past few years. Dermatologists, medical researchers, and pharmaceutical companies have refined formulas for improved results and a greater variety of possible applications. While there are numerous different name brands and types of injectables, two of the main options are neuromodulator injections and dermal fillers. Education & Training

Dr. Mahsa Karavan-Jahromi earned her medical degree from the University of Washington Medical School in Seattle. She also earned her Master of Public Health and completed her internship at the University of Washington. Dr. Karavan completed her dermatology residency in Salt Lake City at the University of Utah.

During her residency in Salt Lake City (SLC), she learned that the city has the nation’s highest rate of melanoma diagnosis (and deaths), and that firefighters are at even higher risk of skin cancer compared to the general population. This knowledge motivated her to design an intervention program for local firefighters that included customized education, free skin cancer screenings, and a free annual supply of sunscreen for all SLC firefighters. “It was extremely rewarding to provide this annual program for the area’s hard-working firefighters,” said Dr. Karavan.
