She was awarded a patent while working as a design engineer before deciding to devote her talents to medicine.
She attended medical school at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland. Her internship training was performed at Scott Air Force Base Medical Center, Belleville, Illinois. She completed her Dermatology residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
