About Dr. Susan Schaberg, MD

As a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Susan Schaberg treats patients from newborns to seniors for problems of the skin, hair and nails. Dr. Schaberg is a native to the area with family going back several generations, including a great-grandfather who was an Edwardsville Fire Chief. She grew up on Kendall Hill, daughter of Harold, who worked as a Shell refinery insulator, and Carol, who worked as a Kroger checker.

Dr. Schaberg graduated from Roxana High School in 1982 and SIU-Edwardsville in 1986. After graduation from SIUE, she put her undergraduate degree (in chemistry and math) to use as a beer chemist at Anheuser-Busch, Inc. During her time at Anheuser-Busch, she discovered an interest in business and went on to pursue an MBA at the Kellogg School of Northwestern University.

She worked in marketing/product management at Kraft Foods and Pet Inc. While she found marketing fun and interesting at Kraft and Pet, even being awarded a 1991 Kraft Foods President's Award for Outstanding Marketing, she longed for new challenges and meaning in her life. She then decided to go to medical school.

Dr. Schaberg obtained her MD from SIU School of Medicine. She completed her internship in internal medicine/pediatrics at Creighton/UNMC, and then her dermatology residency at University of California, Irvine (UCI), serving as chief resident in her final year. At UCI, she also was selected as a clinical research fellow. This service included being lead investigator in the development of many new medicines and novel dermatologic therapies. Dermatology training at UCI is intense in the numbers of patients seen and procedures performed. There is an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment (including a high number of surgical cases) of skin disease in all ethnicities. Cosmetic procedures are also significant (as one would expect in the heart of Orange County, California). Training includes rotations at the renowned Beckman Laser Institute in Irvine, the site of development of much new laser technology.

Dr. Schaberg is now a board-certified dermatologist and elected fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. After initially practicing in Southern California she decided to return back home to her native Southern Illinois, first working at Scott Air Force base and then for almost four years at the Carbondale Center for Medical Arts. She then saw the opportunity to return to her hometown area to open her own practice, Schaberg Dermatology, in April 2007. She has found the practice to be as rewarding as she had anticipated. She now lives in St. Louis' Central West End with her husband Mike, an attorney, and several rescue dogs, a rescue cat, a bird and a pond full of koi.
