Medical Expertise of Dr. Toni Stockton, MD
About Dr. Toni Stockton, MD
As an allergy-prone teenager, I had skin problems beyond those experienced by the typical adolescent. I soon learned the difference a dermatologist could make.
My dermatologist, Dr. Sloan, a well-respected physician in the Pittsburgh area, treated me for a reaction I had to an over-the-counter acne product. He was confident that he could make my swollen, rosy red face better very soon. And he did. My subsequent visits to his office for treatment of my eczema, other allergic reactions, and acne, gave me great insight in to what a dermatologist does for people, beyond treating them for basic skin problems. I saw that he really enjoyed dermatology, and he enjoyed making a difference in the lives of his patients.
I chose medicine in college, not because of Dr. Sloan's example, but because I enjoyed math, chemistry and science. My first goal was to be a medical researcher, but I soon learned that research was not a people-oriented profession.
As a student physician at Howard University Medical School, I took a dermatology elective and learned that my life experiences as a dermatology patient made it very easy to relate to other patients and understand their problems. This reinforced my interest in becoming a dermatologist. I was board certified in dermatology in 1987.
My experience has taught me that good medicine is more than talking down to people, and shuffling them off with a prescription in hand. I believe the most important part of treating my patients is educating them about their conditions, and using their medical history to discover advanced solutions.
