Thoughts on Asthma by Dr. Jagadish Boggavarapu, MD

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects your airways. The inside walls of the airways become inflamed (swollen), and is lined with excessive amounts of mucous, often in response to an environmental stimulus. Asthma affects nearly 17 million adults and children in this country.

Symptoms of Asthma include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and chest tightness.

Our clinic provides a comprehensive evaluation for adults and children to detect asthma. A detailed history and spirometry (breathing test), which measures the narrowing of the airways, are included in the evaluation.

Asthma is a chronic but treatable condition. Our goal is to tailor a treatment plan to meet the patient’s needs by using appropriate medications and managing triggers of asthma. The triggers of asthma include allergic rhinitis (nasal allergies), exercise, reflux, chronic sinusitis, cold air or stress. In children the most common triggers are viral illnesses.

Asthma is one of the leading causes of children missing school.
