Biologics for asthma is based on phenotypes of asthma.  Xolair is used for allergic asthma which is based on perennial allergens and IgE levels.  There are 4 other biologics for benralizumab (Fasenra), dupilumab (Dupixent), mepolizumab (Nucala), and reslizumab (Cinqair) - treat eosinophilic asthma, a type of asthma where white blood cells know as eosinophils build up in lungs and cause inflammation.  These biologics are steroid-sparing and decrease the frequency of asthma flares and subsequently ER visits and or hospitalizations.  Tezepelumab (Tezspire) is another biologic that is not directed at a specific biologic marker.

Important role in specific type of patients who have allergy background and failed to respond to traditional inhaler treatment despite best efforts by patient and physician. A lot of research is published, we have a lot more knowledge to approach asthma in a new way tailored to the individual patient own immune system and control their asthma the best way
